Bangor 2 seal Division 3 plate as QUB 3 withdraw

(B&D League 2018/19 Week 20) The Fruithill Ravens thought they were still in the Division 3 Plate race after a win over Ballynafeigh 3 - but the withdrawal of their Week 21 opponents means that Bangor 2 cannot now be caught.

Division 1

  • Fruithill Hawks 3.5-1.5 Civil Service
  • Ballynafeigh 2 4-0 Strand 1 (forfeit)
  • QUB 1 4-1 Ballynafeigh 1

Ballynafeigh 2 are no longer in danger of finishing bottom of the division after champions-elect Strand 1's board 1, Calum Leitch, failed to show up for their match at Ballynafeigh Community House. This meant that the Ormeau Road side were declared 4-0 winners (they were unable to claim full points as they only fielded four players). Over the three games that did get played, Ballynafeigh 2 won 2-1. including the upset of the week as Paul McNaughton (1567) beat Modestas Razbadauskas (1721). Mark Newman (1664) did well to draw against John Cairns (1976) for Civil Service against the Fruithill Hawks, but it was to no avail as the visitors slumped to a 3.5-1.5 defeat. Ballynafeigh 1 could only field two players - Damien Cunningham and Ian Woodfield - against QUB 1, although they both did well to draw against 1800+ opposition.

Division 3

  • Ballynafeigh 4 1.5-3.5 Strand 3
  • Fruithill Ravens 4-1 Ballynafeigh 3
  • QUB 3 0-5 Strand 4 (forfeit)

The Fruithill Ravens needed a win against bottom side Ballynafeigh 3 in order to keep the chase for the Plate mathematically alive going into the final week - and that is exactly what they got as they won 4-1, with Frank Carrothers, Gerry Collins, Michael Toal, and Harry Skerbergs all winning. However, QUB 3 - who just happen to be the Ravens' week 21 opponents - withdrew from the league after forfeiting their match against Strand 4. Their remaining match against the Ravens has been cancelled and their results have been stricken from the records. This means the Ravens are five points behind Bangor 2 with no more games to play, ensuring that the Plate will be going to the Groomsport outfit. In the week's other match, Ballynafeigh 4 were beaten by Strand 3.
