World Chess Championship

#37 "Rookie": Irish News 29th December 1983

In the World Chess Championship Semi-Finals, Kasparov beat Korchnoi 7-4 while Smyslov beat Ribli 6½-4½. Below is Kasparov's exciting victory in the eleventh game, which clinched his place in the final play-off against Smyslov. meanwhile, first prize in Brighton's Computer Games Ltd. Tournament went to English grandmaster John Nunn, making a "habit" of doing well recently.

In joint second place were Nigel Short and William Watson, both English international masters, on 6 points out of 9, a point behind Nunn. But Short's defeat by Watson in the last round left him one point "short" of becoming the youngest grandmaster at 18, in the world.

Back home the Ulster Chess Division 2 League at the half-way stage is closely fought, as shown below, between its five teams. After four early defeats, Fisherwick have edged back into contention with three wins, including a 5½-½ win over then leaders Bangor.
