Ladies Day with WIM Trisha Report
Delighted to have welcomed a few ladies back to the event as well as some newcomers. We started the afternoon off with some casual game play and introductions.
This event was extra special as we were lucky enough to host Irish Women’s Champion, WIM Trisha Kanyamarala. Trisha, who is just 17 years old and studying for her leaving cert, really put the effort in by preparing a lovely presentation and sharing two of her games with us all.
Trisha shared her experiences to date in what has been a cracking start to her chess career. From playing in the 4NCL & PRO Chess League, to representing Ireland at the Olympiad as the top board for the Ladies team and meeting the president of Ireland! Trisha shared the opportunities chess offers such as travel and gaining chess scholarships to a number of universities. What was really great, was she reminded everyone at the end of her talk how important it is to enjoy the game, win or lose. To quote her presentation, “there are no losers, only winners and future winners”.
Trisha then moved onto analysing her games; it was great to see everyone engaging no matter their own playing level or previous event attendance. In explaining her thought process, Trisha shared the “check, capture, threats” concept which allowed everyone to engage further by spotting various moves as they related to each.
You can view the games she picked at the end of this article.
We are extremely grateful to Trisha & her family for making her way to Greenisland FC Chess to support our event and taking the time out of her busy studying schedule to talk to all of our guests. Good luck on your exams, Trisha!
And finally, a special shout out to Chris Dorrian & Greenisland FC Chess Club for hosting.
