[Event "G Annesley vs D Roberts: Chapter 1"] [Site "https://lichess.org/study/j0ptM7nW/LU4D5rTa"] [Result "*"] [UTCDate "2023.01.25"] [UTCTime "20:39:49"] [Variant "Standard"] [ECO "B23"] [Opening "Sicilian Defense: Closed, Traditional"] [Annotator "https://lichess.org/@/NIgal"] 1. e4 c5 2. Nc3 Nc6 3. Bb5 g6 4. Bxc6 { Black has a choice between bxc6 and dxc6, both are perfectly good but lead to different games. White's move gives up the two bishops but rules out ... Nd4 and aims for a closed style position helping the Knight. } 4... dxc6 5. f4 Bg7 6. Nf3 Nf6 7. O-O O-O 8. d3 b6 9. e5 Nd5 10. Ne4 Bf5 { This has all been seen before at Master level, and the position is slightly better for White. } 11. c3 c4 { After 11. c3 the evaluation is completely equal. ... c4 is fine, other alternatives were ... Nc7 and ... f6 } 12. Nf2?! Bxd3?! { Both of these moves are a little dubious. Black would have been better off to have played cxd3 with some advantage, whilst White would have been better playing Nh4 or Nd4. For my part, I did not like provoking g4, but actually this would have led to a slight plus for Black. We are now back to a slight White plus. } 13. Nxd3 cxd3 14. Qxd3 Nc7 15. Qc2 Qd5 16. Be3 Rfd8 { Nice accurate moves } 17. Rad1?! Qxa2 { An inaccuracy from White and the evaluation shifts slightly in Black's favour. I thought at the time that it was a gambit from White, but in the brief post-mortem Gareth indicated it was probably an oversight. } 18. f5?! { This move is objectively not the best, but a good practical choice creating complications to make life difficult for Black. White has some initiative, but not enough for the pawn. Now simply 17. ... Rd1 18. Rd1 gf5 and Black would be a clean pawn up. But after the move Black plays, we return to an assessment of White advantage. } 18... Nd5 19. Bc1 Qc4 { Things are getting complicated. The move played by Black is not enough for equality, and I was expecting 19. fxg6, the best move though is 19. Rd4 pushing the Queen to a weaker square, for example 19. ... Qc5 20. Kh1 and the White King attack provides a good advantage. Instead, he pulls the trigger early and the game should revert to near equality again. Black plays the right line. } 20. e6?! fxe6 21. fxg6 h6! { Black must close lines, and the only move to stay in it. } 22. Nd4? { A blunder from White, though not an obvious one, Black's refutation is lovely and again requires an only move. Better would have been either Rde1 and White maintains a small plus, anything else is equal basically. } 22... Nxc3! { An only move, but it should have been a winning one. The evaluation is now over -3 and against a decent player is resignable. I had looked at other ideas but quickly realised this theme had to be it. } 23. bxc3 { The only move, especially with threats like ... Ne2+ in the air in certain lines } 23... Bxd4+?? { Unbelievable, especially as all my analysis was based upon the correct 23. ... Rxd4. For some reason going back and forth in my mind, and then rushing completely unnecessarily I went for a complete lemon. The evaluation changes from -3.6 to +6..6 in one move. When you play moves like this, the feeling of being a complete idiot is highly pervasive. } 24. Rxd4! { All over, I played out to Mate as I simply could not believe what I had done } 24... Rxd4 25. Qf2 { In my disgust I allowed the mate, as it is completely gone } 25... Rh4 26. Qf7+ Kh8 27. Qh7# { Well done, Gareth. A good example of why it is important to keep up the work over the board. In a way our styles were well illustrated here. Gareth plays fighting uncompromising chess, if sometimes with a slight tendency to over optimism, while I play in an intuitive manner, but with far too many gross blunders! } *
